Over half of the international trade that East of England businesses do is with the 27 other members of the European Union. It’s our most important trading relationship. Our region’s trade with the EU is five times larger than with North America and four times greater than with Asia. New free-trade deals or not, that close and productive relationship isn’t going to change any time soon unless, of course, we deliberately try to harm our European trading interests.
We should cherish and protect the most critical trading relationship we have today. Our economic well-being demands it. Our view on Europe is simple:
We acknowledge the result of the 2016 referendum, which gave the government a mandate to start negotiations to leave – but we believe the final decision should be made by the British people, not by politicians.
Keep the UK in the single market and customs union – trade must continue without damaging customs controls at the border.
Protect the rights of EU and UK citizens living abroad – ending the uncertainty for millions of people.
